Social worker to contest for NC from Mongar

A university graduate with a passion for social work, Pema Dorji is the lone candidate from Silambi gewog in Mongar to declare his candidature for the upcoming National Council (NC) elections.

Twenty-eight year old Pema Dorji told Business Bhutan that he wants to contribute toward strengthening the house of law while focusing on social services. “I decided to contest because I have a strong will and determination and am willing to work hard and learn.”

Pema Dorji holds a Bachelor’s degree in eco-evs from Sherubtse College in Kanglung.

During his stay in college, he inspired others to do social work and started many clubs in the college that were involved in community service. He is also the recipient of the social service medal from the college.

“My interest lies in serving others,” he said.

He had always wanted to serve the nation and inspire youth to do public services. Before declaring his candidature, he started an agriculture project by pooling farmers together for commercial faming activities and owns a shop at Kanglung.

Pema Dorji feels that by participating, he is giving more choices to the people.

If elected, he plans to serve his people with equity and justice. He also wants to act as a bridge between the people and government and keep people informed about the laws that are enacted at the house.

“I want to come up with strategic plans to address identified problems and issues in the Dzongkhag,” he added.

He said that he has experienced the hardships of rural life so he can connect with the rural folks and can lend a helping hand.

Born and brought up in his village, Pema Dorji shares a strong bond with his community. “I can easily understand the needs of my people.”

Additionally, Pema Dorji has a close acquaintance with the people of his constituency as he does social service in his gewog, which he wants to expand across the whole country.

He hopes to inspire youth to come forward and engage themselves in social services if he is elected.
