Puenchhas FC, a team from Kanglung will play against Sherubtse FC, the college team in the finals of the Chancellor’s Cup, which was organized for the first time in Sherubtse College.
In the first semifinal round played on Tuesday, Sherubtse FC defeated Rangjung Central School with a score of 3:2 and took their place in the finals.
The second semifinal round was played on Wednesday where Puenchhas FC defeated Methidrang United FC, a team from Trashigang with a score of 2:0.
Sangay Tenzin, Puenchhas FC’s team captain said that all the teams that participated in the tournament were strong. “I am thrilled our team made it to the finals.”
Meanwhile, he also said that with the installation of the artificial football turf and the organization of such a tournament in Kanglung, the football craze has increased in the past few months.
A total of 38 teams from Trashigang, Samdrup Jongkhar, Monggar and Pemagatshel took part in the month-long tournament.
The organizers of the tournament said that the huge number of teams that participated has motivated them to organize similar tournaments in the future as well.
A participant, Nono Jigme said that the tournament was easily one of the biggest football tournaments in the east with more than 600 players across the country taking part.
He also said that such tournaments are not organized often in the east. “It gives an opportunity for football enthusiasts to come together.”
Another football enthusiast, Deepak said that he hoped to see the rise of football champs from the east as well.
The winners will take away a prize money of Nu 130,000 with a trophy and medals and the runners-up will get Nu 80,000 with a trophy and medals.
The Chancellor’s Cup kick started on April 28 and will end on June 9.
It was organized by Sherubtse College as a tribute to His Majesty The King and to celebrate 50 years of Sherubtse’s contribution to academic excellence. It was also initiated to observe 50 years of Indo-Bhutan friendship.
