PDP declares its candidate from Dokar-Shaba constituency

Former managing director of Bhutan Power Corporation Ltd. (BPCL) Gem Tshering has been declared by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) as its last candidate on Thursday afternoon, who would be contesting from Dokar-Shaba constituency in Paro and ‪replacing incumbent MP Kezang D Wangmo, for the 2018 elections.

Gem Tshering, 59, from Lomekha village, Dogar gewog in Paro, worked in various leadership positions both in the civil service and the corporation sector in a career spanning over 34 years. He has Msc in Energy Planning and Policy from AIT, Thailand.

Gem Tshering told the congregation of reporters and journalists gathered at the PDP’s office in Thimphu on Thursday afternoon that he is joining politics and as a candidate of PDP to offer his services to the people of his constituency and the people of Bhutan.

“It is an opportunity to serve the Tsa-Wa-Sum by directly engaging in the democratic process and contributing to nation building,” he added.

Meanwhile, Gem Tshering began his career with the agriculture ministry. For major part of his life, he worked with the Chukha Hydroelectric Power Corporation (CHPC) as a shift engineer and superintend engineer. He later joined BPCL as a General Manager of Transmission and went on to become the Executive Director of Transmission Construction and Director of Transmission System. He resigned as the managing director of BPC to join politics.

PDP’s General Secretary Sonam Jatso said Gem Tshering brings along many years of leadership experience; further strengthening their pool of 47 candidates and their party. “He is a credible leader with a strong track record,” he said.

“PDP believes that strong and dynamic leaders are not only necessary but also vital in the democratic process. And to this end, the party has made conscientious efforts in picking the most capable candidates so that the people of Bhutan have a diversity of leaders to choose from,” he added.

Lyonchhen Dasho Tshering Tobgay, who is also the PDP president, said the party has looked for candidates who have qualification, capability and experience. “On top of that, we have looked for candidates with good heart, integrity and principle,” he added.

Meanwhile, the PDP has declared 29 new candidates contesting the elections this year. The party has also replaced 15 serving MPs.

The serving MPs, whose candidature have been considered at least as of now, are Rinzin Dorji from Phuentsholing, Kinley Om from Bji-Kar-Tshog-Uesu in Haa, Pema Dukpa from Khamaed Lunana in Gasa, and Tshering from North-Thimphu.
