Govt. pledges support to film association

The Ministry of Home and Cultural Affairs supported the Bhutan Film Association (BFA) during the Bhutan film festival through a grant of Nu 2mn this year.

The home and cultural affairs minister, Dawa Gyaltshen was responding to Member of Parliament from Dokar Sharpa constituency in Paro, Kezang Wangmo’s question about government initiatives in supporting BFA financially during the question hour session in the parliament yesterday.

Lyonpo said that BFA is an important association that contributes in preserving and promoting Bhutan’s culture and tradition.

He said that the government has been helping the association in many ways, for example by screening Bhutanese movies in every dzongkhag and gewog and schools across the country.

“To further encourage the association, the Prime Minister will be awarding Nu 3mn for the Bhutan film festival,” said Lyonpo.

Additionally, the Ministry of Information and Communications has been providing financial assistance to BFA since a long time now.

“In 2015, BFA received Nu 5, 00,000; Nu 3, 00,000 in 2016 and Nu 4, 00,000 in 2017 for the film festival from the information and communications ministry,” the minister added.

To facilitate screening of movies, His Majesty the Fifth King granted land kidu to BFA for the construction of a few movie theaters in Thimphu.

“The movie producers are facing difficulty processing loans but it is not within government scope to provide loans,” said Lyonpo, adding that the government will however continue to support BFA as best as possible.
