First electronic repair shop opens in Kanglung

Kanglung residents having electronic gadget hiccups are smiling through their troubles after a new electronic repair shop opened in town earlier this month.

Twenty-three year old Sonam Gyaltshen from Phongmey, Trashigang with a loan of Nu 300,000 from the Loden foundation, opened the electronic repair shop, the only one in Kanglung so far.

“I provide services such as laptop and pc repair, electronic appliances repair, web development and I also look into network issues,” said Sonam Gyaltshen.

Sonam Gyaltshen studied computer science and engineering from the University of Bangalore in India. The business idea had floated in his mind since he was in college. During vacations and free time in college, he learned more about electronic appliances repair.

“Since there is no other electronic repair shop in Kanglung and nearby places, I think my business will face less competition and pick up in time,” he said.

Sonam Gyaltshen chose to set up his shop in Kanglung as it is an educational hub and most offices are based in the vicinity.

Ap Dorji, an elderly man from Kanglung who walks in to ask if his old refrigerator can be repaired returns happy because the reply is positive.

Ap Dorji said he could not repair his refrigerator for the last three months and had it not been for the new electronic shop, he would have had to carry his refrigerator all the way to Samdrup Jongkhar.”It has saved costs and transportation hassles.”

In due time, Sonam Gyaltshen hopes to cater to the needs of not just the people of Kanglung, but also to those of nearby places and other dzongkhags.

Sonam Tenzin, a student from Sherubtse College said that having an electronic repair shop in town is convenient. “We do not have to wait till the vacation to repair our electronic gadgets.”

Additionally, when such a facility was absent in Kanglung, electronic gadgets used to be sent to Phuentsholing and Samdrup Jongkhar for repair.

To promote his business in the initial stages Sonam Gyaltshen is providing a free service of antivirus updates to his first 50 customers.

In the near future, he plans to extend his business to the other eastern dzongkhags.
