Festival of State of Assam launched

The Festival of State of Assam was launched in celebration of the golden jubilee anniversary of formal diplomatic relations between Bhutan and India on Thursday.

It is an initiative by the Embassy of India, Bhutan and government of Assam.

The minister of home and culture affairs (MoHCA), Dawa Gyeltshen, said that  relations between Bhutan and Assam far precede the formal relations between Bhutan and India. He said that since time immemorial, people of Bhutan and Assam have always lived side-by-side like brothers and sisters sharing and learning from respective rich cultures and tradition.

“Bhutan is committed to strengthening this age old ties with the government and people of Assam. The establishment of our Consulate in Guwahati in February this year is a reflection of our desire to foster greater cooperation with the people of Assam for a shared future for harmony and prosperity,” said Lyonpo Dawa Gyeltshen.

During the launch, the Culture Minister of Assam, Shri Naba Kumar Doley, said, Bhutan is very special as Assam and Bhutan share one of the most important geographical tagging that is the borders. He also said that Bhutan’s social, cultural and economic ties with Assam are deep-rooted.

Following the launch, Business to Business (B2B) networking meeting between tour operators of Assam and Bhutan saw an exchange of tourism opportunities. A total of seven Bhutanese tour operators and officials from the Tourism Council of Bhutan (TCB) and three tour operators from Assam attended the meeting.

The Director of TCB, Chhimmy Pem, said that TCB is happy that a B2B meeting is being organized with the tour operators from both sides. She also added that there is a lot of potential in the joint itinerary as both destinations have a lot to offer.

The B2B networking meeting saw discussions on how best tour operators on both sides can work together for better tourism opportunities.

Talking at the meeting, proprietor of Koyeli Tours and Travels in Guwahati, Assam, Arijit Purkayastha, said that people of Assam are comfortable with Bhutanese people coming to Assam. He also suggested that Bhutan and Assam should come up with a joint promotion program where officials from both countries can share in one forum.
