A private employee among NC aspirants from Samdrup Jongkhar

A 36-year-old private employee, Kelzang Phuntsho, is one of the candidates from among the11 National Council (NC) aspiring candidates registered from Samdrup Jongkhar to declare his candidature for the upcoming NC elections in 2018.

Hailing from Lingnang Ringmo village of Wangphu gewog in Samdrup Jongkhar, Kelzang Phuntsho said he had always been keen to participate in the NC elections, albeit he is contesting for the first time.

He believes that for a country to remain sovereign and to achieve the aspiration of all Bhutanese, that is to be happy and peaceful for all times to come, will depend on upholding the country’s rule of laws. He reasoned that it was because of this he wanted to vie for a seat in the Upper House from Samdrup Jongkhar.

“Therefore, NC is the place where all laws, plans, policies and programs are being reviewed keeping in mind this very urge of all Bhutanese. My participation in the upcoming NC election should help people of my kind in the Dzongkhag. If otherwise, my participation is unnecessary,” he added.

Kelzang Phuntsho, meanwhile, has a Bachelor’s degree in English and Environmental Studies from Royal Thimphu College. He completed his graduation under the Continuing Education program at RTC in 2017. He has worked in various private organizations for over 13 years and is currently the administration officer of New Edge Technologies Private Limited in Thimphu.

And while Kelzang Phuntsho would concentrate on his ability to better the chances of representing the people, he said he has never thought about the chances of winning.

“I believe that people of Samdrup Jongkhar deserve to win, and they will win. My chance of winning is the least important here, and in fact no candidates should win but the people,” he said.

He also added that the people of his kind are his strength. “Samdrup Jongkhar is a poverty-stricken Dzongkhag, but people are kind hearted, compassionate, and love to be harmonious.”

If elected, he said he has different to offer as opposed to the serving candidate in his Dzongkhag. Kelzang Phuntsho wants to present realities to the people of Samdrup Jongkhar and become the true representation of all of their aspirations.

“The serving candidate’s background and mine is entirely different. The serving candidate served for almost 10 years and I thankful for it. I believe with changing times, aspirations of people change, situations change, needs and wants of the people change, and to suit the changing times options are necessary. I am one of the options, and in later stages I want to become people’s trustful candidate,” he said.

He added that he would also let people of his Dzongkhag feel that they are represented in every aspect.

Meanwhile, in the last 13 years, Kelzang Phuntsho has worked as farmer, quarry labor, waiter in hotels, as salesman, technical executive, Sr. technician, Data Center Infrastructure manager, and administration officer of New Edge Technologies Private Limited.

After he dropped out of school, Kelzang Phuntsho then completed his higher secondary school and college under the Continuing Education program. He has also bagged certificates for academic excellence in studies. Currently, he is on a familiarization tour in Samdrup Jongkhar.
