He was rustic and naughty: the head teacher branded him the most mischievous kid in school. He flunked in Class VIII, and dropped out of school for a year. One day while grazing cows he realized life calling.
It took a lot of cajoling by his father to let teachers re-admit him to school. Suresh Chandra Mothey was determined by then. He walked hours to the school in Damphu and years later walked down the steps of a medical college in Cuba and returned to Bhutan as a doctor.
It was a witch doctor in his village in Tshokana that inspired Suresh Chandra Mothey to become a doctor. Once he saw before his eyes a girl die after the local witch doctor failed and the girl couldn’t be taken to the hospital.
Life was not easy. Without money in his hand, he had to take tuitions to a junior student at school for Nu 100 as a monthly fee.
This 28-year-old doctor, who describes himself as a taciturn, couldn’t face a crowd before he left for Cuba seven years ago. But now, he says, he can entertain the complete Changlimithang crowd.
He recalls the day when he got the news that he had been selected for the scholarship and wished that his late father was there to see his son do him proud. “My dad had been the pillar to what I have become today, and my inspiration throughout,” said the doctor.
Talking about his experience in Cuba, he says that the first two years were horrible. “It was a big challenge for us, the long hours of travelling, the place, language, culture, geography, food and the heat made me homesick,” But things changed after he made new friends and took Spanish classes.
Apart from practicing on human bodies, he likes to play guitar and listen to Jagit Singh ghazals and watch dramas and movies of Alpacino, Brad Pitt and Anthony Hopkins.
Sipping down a warm coffee and his eyes sparkling with the Leo confidence he said that young people should always keep seeking what they want to do in future. “There is always time to do what you like to do the most, he said.
Dr Suresh Chandra Mothey he has begun his attachment at the Thimphu Hospital. He further dreams to go for specialization.

Dear Sir,
It is the environment plus a strong will power which helps an individual to achieve his/her aim. I have meet many students in my career as a teacher and Principal who have achieved their aim by working hard and never getting distracted from their preset aim no matter what ever type of hardship may come in their way. I know one Bhutaneese student whom I taught in the past is doing wonderful job in his career as doctor in Bhutan.
I am a wellwisher of Bhutan
