The border town of Gelephu consumes about 30 kilograms of mushrooms daily, much less than 55 kilograms produced by the only mushroom farm catering the town. As such, the farm at Zumlingthang, about a kilometer from the main town, has to dispose the remaining 25 kg of the edible fungus daily. Bhutan exported to India, Bangladesh and Japan, a total of Nu 94.491 million last year from its dolomite, limestone, gypsum, stone, and coal, talc and quartzite deposits. This was an increase of 32.4% on 2008 exports. Government royalty came to 4.6% of the revenue, while mines royalty comprised 0.7%. When I flew away from Bhutan last Sunday, I felt that I had been sent away from paradise. Not a tropical paradise of my imaginings, but a real life paradise that comes from feeling content – at home. The opening of the first private bank, the Druk Punjab National Bank Ltd. (DPNB), on Wednesday January 27, has left many traders in the border town of Phuentsholing, including Indian traders, excited.
