Despite the assurance of the Indian government that food prices will decrease, the adamant food inflation in India has triggered fears that it will eventually trickle down to Bhutan. When representatives of the government led by the prime minister called upon a consultative meeting with the stakeholders of the tourism industry Wednesday, the Tourism Council of Bhutan (TCB) hall was a chock-a-block. Tour operators and guide association members were happy, but not the hoteliers. They did not want 100% Foreign Direct Investments in hotels below five star rating. While Bhutan’s first tourists this season were enjoying the Punakha Domche, the prime minister sealed a debate on the new tourism tariff Wednesday at the capital. Before a gathering of tourism stakeholders, along with five cabinet ministers, the prime minister asked those in the Tourism Council of Bhutan Hall to raise hands whether to increase the daily tariff to US$ 250. bhutan repaid nu 56 billion in 27 years on loans and grants

Bhutan repaid a total of US$ 1,210.6m (about Nu 56b) for loans and grants over 27 years between 1981-82 and 2008-09 fiscal. It averages to a little more than Nu 2b a year which is about one sixth of the internal revenue of 2007-08 fiscal. The highest repayment was to the government of India with US$ 596.1m (about Nu 27.4b) followed by the World Bank with US$ 153.4m (about Nu 7.05b) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) with US$ 120.3m (about 5.5b).
