shorter trade route to bangladesh opens

The new route is expected to benefit eastern Bhutan and provide an alternate route for central Bhutan Three trucks laden with mandarin from eastern Bhutan made their way through the Indian state of Meghalaya to Bangladesh marking the opening of the new Tamabil port in Bangladesh on Tuesday. imf notes private bank entry, possible risks

The executive board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) said the entry of private banks in the country will help improve the distribution of money in the Bhutanese economy. After consultation with Bhutan in December the IMF board also stated the need to strengthen the supervision of the financial sector in light of the private banks which otherwise could trigger further credit growth together with the high non performing loans and credit risks... (more...)

The financial sector recorded a growth in June 2009 from the same period the year before despite profits dwindling by more than half In the April-June quarter, 2009, when the global financial crisis was dragging the performance of banks around the globe down the gutter, the profit of the Bhutanese financial sector also saw a major dip of about 56% because of an increased provision of bad loans. A Winter Interlude

A vacation trip to the state of Kerala in Southern India, can be the perfect interlude for the Bhutanese mid-winter blahs.  Kerala offers winter sunshine, a balmy 30 celcius daytime, and night time no less than 20.  It was sounding pretty attractive, especially after this year’s desperately cold December. The fresh red tomato, even before it gets enough time for a quick vegetable-nap, reaches the 185-kilometre truck ride from Jaigaon to Thimphu. In around six hours, the tomato’s value increases more than 100%, from Nu 6 to Nu 30. The situation is not different in other towns like Paro. “Vegetables are much cheaper in Jaigaon but here we pay more than double the price,” said Lalita Lama, a Paro Hotelier, in rage.
