A taxi driver was imprisoned for three years and he has to pay a compensation of Nu 45,000 for molesting a six-year-old girl whom he picked up from the bus stand near Chubachu School last year.
The taxi driver offered to reach her home at Langchophakha and dropped her off near Lingkana Bridge after molesting her.
The case was reported to the police by the victim’s mother, after the victim shared the incident with her mother.
According to the judgment, the police arrested the driver and kept him in detention for 21 days before the prison term.
Meanwhile, a witness who saw the victim on the road with her lunch bag and disorderly kira gave a statement to the police. The witness stated that they were returning from Druk School and were on the way to Langchophakha when they saw the girl walking alone and offered to drop her off home.
According to the Evidence Act of Bhutan 2005, section 46-C, a fact which could be perceived by any sense or in any other manner shall be the evidence of the witness, who says he perceived it by that sense or in that manner.
Likewise, the defendant had taken the girl in his taxi as per CCTV footage. The girl sat on the front seat, while the taxi driver offered her a lift.
However, the court examined the girl’s medical report and found no injuries.
